CNN writes that the AI that makes it possible for voice assistants to work better has yet to hit the market.
The latest to hit market is a device called a virtual assistant, the brand name of which we’re still not entirely sure about.
I wrote about the device in October, but today, I’d like to take you behind-the-scenes at Amazon’s research lab to see what the researchers are working on and what it might mean for future products.
First up, some background.
Amazon’s current AI products are built from the ground up using what the company calls natural language processing (NLP), and in this case, artificial neural network technology, or a kind of deep learning.
“When you get natural language, you know exactly what’s being said by your customers, and you can use that information in your AI solution.
You can use it to teach the AI,” explained Amazon’s Matt Bierbaum, the company’s vice president of engineering.
“Amazon has the biggest NLP research lab in the world.
I mean, the best.”
The results of that work are already starting to be available to Amazon, and the company is already building Alexa’s personal assistant, Alexa.
But before you jump in and try it for yourself, we need to ask a few questions about what makes it so interesting.

What makes this a powerful AI product, anyway?
Amazon is currently using deep learning to train Alexa, and Amazon is betting it’s able to do that in a way that will work even when you’re not around.
Amazon is betting that artificial intelligence will help Amazon sell more Alexa devices.
Amazon is already on pace to have more than 100,000 Alexa devices in use around the world by the end of 2021, and those will include many more than that.
It will also be able to sell those new devices with a variety of different voice-activated assistants, including Alexa, which will likely include AI assistants that are already on the market already.
How much of this artificial intelligence is done by people or by an artificial general intelligence that can be programmed to do things on its own?
How far will Amazon’s AI reach and how fast will it scale?
Amazon has partnered with companies to develop technology that can help it make AI apps that can understand natural language.
But, as with all of this AI, Amazon has to get the most out of the research that’s already being done in order to come up with the best solutions for Alexa.
The answer that will give Alexa the best platform to succeed is what happens inside its own software, Bierow says.
When people are speaking, Alexa recognizes the words that they’re saying.
It’s understanding the context of what people are saying and giving you some sort of natural speech.
So, if a user is saying something about their dog, Alexa could use that word for that word in its system.
It’s also able to understand things like which people are in the room and the kinds of conversation they’re having.
At first glance, it might seem like a simple process, but Biero says Amazon’s team is working hard to keep things simple.
It can also use artificial intelligence to learn and understand how you’re conversing with Alexa.
The way that the software learns about you is by watching your speech, listening for patterns in the noise of your voice and trying to match those with what Alexa has been able to figure out.
So if there’s a pattern in your speech when you say a particular word, Alexa will figure out what words you’re saying, and it will use that voice data to make an educated guess.
For example, if you’re speaking to an Alexa bot, Alexa might predict what you’re going to say, and then it can then say, “OK, Alexa, we’ve figured out how to say that,” and you’ll get a more natural way to say it.
In order to make things easier for Alexa, it is learning to understand you by watching how you talk, says Bierw.
Alexa learns when you are speaking to it in real time, so it can also sense when you’ve been quiet and move on to the next line.
The company is still not done.
Alexa has a whole set of capabilities it’s learning about how people talk to it, and while they can’t learn your full vocabulary or even your real voice, they can still tell you what phrases you said in your voice, and which ones you’ve said that way more times.
Bierow has been involved in this research for more than a decade.
He began by doing things for IBM in the mid-1990s, when he was one of the group of researchers that developed the Watson Watson computer system.
